Parenting College Students - Ways to Help Children Learn Financial Responsibility

Parenting college students is a never ending responsibility.  While there are many areas in which parents can assist their emerging adults, it is in the arena of finances that parents can often make a huge difference in the lives of their children.

When parenting college students, parents must be mindful of the responsibility their maturing young adult child bears in pursuing a college education.  Parenting college students is a golden opportunity to impart to children the importance of financial responsibility.  There are a number of ways parents can help their students learn financial responsibility.

Financial lessons should begin before the children leave for college.  Parental tendency to worry about a student's expenditures will be exacerbated if parents don't begin to impart financial lessons to their children while they are in high school.

Parenting College Students - Lessons Taught in the Launching Years

Before departing for college, prospective college students need to discuss financial expectations with their parents, including the children's plans for years of matriculation and number of credits to carry.  When parenting college students during their first semester in school, parents and children need to discuss money management and the budgeting of funds.

The discussion of finances when parenting college students prevents any surprises on either side, and it encourages open communication on this matter.  It is imperative for parents to set boundaries and to provide guidance when parenting college students as to financial matters.

The hardest part of establishing independence is for emerging adults to learn to handle their finances proficiently.  College children need to understand that they are receiving a higher education in order to acquire a degree which will lead them to a desirable job.  In parenting college students, parents must reiterate to their children that spending money foolishly does not build their resume and adds no value to their future.

Parenting College Students - Keep Your Eye on the Prize

In parenting college students, we must remind our children to keep their eye on the prize, which is graduation.  Credit cards are fools gold, and every financial discussion when parenting college students should prohibit the utilization of credit cards.

Instead, emerging adults should use a debit card, which has a monetary limit to withdrawals.  Parents need to place some financial onus on the students by making them use part of their spending money on books or on tuition.

In parenting college students, parents must emphasize that there are no free rides in life, and that also applies to a college education.  While parenting college students, parents may suggest that their young adults secure part-time jobs to help defray the cost of their education.  If the emerging adults are responsible for earning their own spending money, there's a good chance they will be more careful how they spend it.

In parenting college students, one of the best lessons conscientious parents can give their children is a sense of financial responsibility.  It's one of the best winning strategies for success in life.
